Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP stresses the importance of cultural identity at Douglas Hyde Summer School

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP conducted the official opening of The Dr Douglas Hyde Summer School in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon at the weekend.

Speaking at the opening, Pat the Cope stressed the importance of Irish language, music and culture.

“The Dr Douglas Hyde Summer School attracts attention from all over Ireland, Europe, and indeed even further afield, for one main reason. It is a celebration of Irish culture. Our culture, and in particular Irish music, is what helps to stand us apart and mark us as unique amongst our European counterparts. It is certainly worthy of this wonderful annual celebration in honour of Dr Douglas Hyde.”

“I want to congratulate the organisers of this year’s festival. They have done a wonderful job in co-ordinating activities throughout the week which will allow visitors and local people alike to polish up on their music skills. There is something for everyone in the programme and I wish them every success with the festival.”

“The involvement of young people in the festival is particularly welcome. Local young people have thrown themselves behind the festival and this enthusiasm and involvement will ensure that the festival will remain a popular date in the Irish festival calendar.”
