Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP highlights the massive potential of aquaculture for the creation of jobs in Ireland

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP speaking today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg highlighted the massive potential of the Irish aquaculture sector.

"In Ireland, the sector is worth over EUR 118 million per annum and employs over 2,000 people. Ireland's aquaculture production is currently fifth highest in the EU. Of note, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that the sector in Ireland may grow by 61% in production by 2030."

"I strongly believe that aquaculture production must be carried out to the highest standards. However, the sector must be allowed to function within the context of an environmentally friendly regime. It is vitally important that the new Common Fisheries Policy allows the sector to sustainably develop in harmony with existing EU environmental law."

"As an economic sector, aquaculture has stalled within the European Union. Structural support for the aquaculture sector is essential. In particular, I would support a special programme of incentives designed to promote the development of offshore, high energy, fish farming in more oceanic conditions than currently practised."

"European aquaculture products must be promoted at the higher value end of the marketplace. I fully support the introduction of measures to strengthen labelling criteria for high quality aquaculture products and organic aquaculture production."

"I firmly believe that the aquaculture sector has huge potential for the creation of jobs in costal communities across Ireland and Europe.
With the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, it is essential to reinvigorate this important sector, both from the point of view of food security
