Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP urges EU leaders to start accession negotiations with Iceland
"At today's meeting of the European Council, I would urge EU leaders to commence accession negotiations with Iceland. I am hopeful of a positive outcome and that Member States will not allow the Ice-save issue to delay the beginning of the process."
"In July 2009, Iceland presented its application for membership of the EU. In February this year, the European Commission responded by providing a favourable opinion on Iceland's application for membership."
"As a result of EEA membership, Iceland has already completed 22 out of the 35 accession chapters of negotiation. Examples of the remaining chapters to be concluded relate to agriculture, fisheries, structural funds, external relations, regional policy and budgetary matters."
"Should the EU leaders provide the green light; the accession negotiations will undoubtedly be tough. However, I am confident that the other chapters will be dealt with in a positive manner by both sides."
Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP is Chairman of the European Parliament delegation with responsibility for Iceland.
