Gallagher MEP highlights the importance of the International Fund for Ireland

Pat the Cope Gallagher, MEP highlighted the importance of the the International Fund for Ireland today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This fund established by the Dublin and London government's to promote economic and social development in the 12 counties on both sides of the border was discussed today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Gallagher stated: "As one who lives in and represents the border region, I fully appreciate the role played by the IFI in the peace process.

The projects supported by the IFI have created well in excess of 40,000 direct jobs and 16,000 indirect jobs, bringing employment to an economically disadvantaged region."

The EU is one of the main contributors to the IFI since its inception in 1986. The contributors to the fund have provided in excess of EUR 800 million with a multiplier effect resulting in total investment of over EUR 2 billion.

"While the "sunset strategy" has been agreed to take the work of the IFI to the end of this year, I do believe that every consideration should be given to prolonging this worthwhile and effective programme."
