MEP Gallagher urges the European Commission to take action against Cancer

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP urged the European Commission to strengthen health promotion strategies and to increase funding for cancer research in order to address the pressing issue of cancer.

Speaking in the European Parliament last night (05 May 2010), Mr. Gallagher stated "It is estimated that 3.2 million European citizens are diagnosed with cancer each year. As the European population ages, current trends indicate that the number of cases diagnosed every year is likely to double over the next 20 years. We must address the plague of cancer."

"Cancer is caused by many factors. Smoking, being overweight, low fruit and vegetable intake, physical inactivity and excess alcohol consumption are all contributing factors. It is essential that health promotion strategies at both a European and a national level are strengthened and properly resourced."

"Early detection is vital as many people are alive today because of early detection. Through cancer research, the European Union can play a leading role. Importantly, over EUR 750 million has been allocated to cancer research under the 7th Framework Programme. However, I would hope that more funding could be made available over the coming years."

"I would also like to pay tribute to all of those in the medical profession in Ireland who provide such exceptional care to cancer patients and their families."
