MEP Gallagher - Better co-ordination at an EU level is needed to deal with the volcanic ash crisis
Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP, the chairman of the European Parliament delegation, which deals with Icelandic affairs today called on the European Commission to introduce a common approach to deal with the volcanic ash crisis.
Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP said today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg "a common approach is needed to deal with this unprecedented situation as the volcanic ash cloud recognises no political or geographical boundaries. Despite, the age of technology that we live in today, we are in the hands of Mother Nature like never before."
"We are now in the sixth day of air traffic restrictions. Many passengers are stranded in airports abroad and are experiencing extreme difficulties in covering extra costs such as additional hotel rooms and in some cases the cost of alternative travel arrangements."
"Some travel insurance policies are expected to pay out for their losses. However, others are not, claiming that the current situation would come under the Act of God clause. It is essential that there is a standard set of rules which applies to a situation of this kind."
"When flights resume, I would urge the airlines to prioritise passengers who need to urgently return home to Ireland to attend a funeral or family occasion."
"It is also essential that the role of Euro-control is strengthened as a result of the crisis. We need a European approach, a common approach. One of the biggest problems facing stranded passengers throughout Europe is the added confusion as a result of contradictory statements by various airlines and national authorities. A Euro-control with real powers is required."
