Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP has encouraged farmers to apply for the new Agri-Environment Scheme which will replace the existing REPS programme.
Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP stated that "the new scheme will be available for farmers coming out of REPS 3 and to farmers who wish to supplement their farm income by taking part in an agri-environmental scheme for the first time. All existing REPS 3 and REPS 4 participants will be allowed to see out the remainder of their contracts."
Mr. Gallagher stated "While it is disappointing that the level of payment is not as high as REPS, the new scheme is simplified as many farmers will not need to submit plans or to consult a planner. As a result, the new scheme will reduce costs for farmers."
"Only farmers with Natura land or non-Natura commonage will have to submit a sustainable management plan. However, these plans will be prepared to a much simpler specification."
The new scheme also differs fundamentally from REPS in that REPS had a whole-farm approach while the new scheme targets a menu of specific environmental actions."
"I understand that a series of regional meetings for prospective participants will take place throughout the North West area in coming weeks. I would like to encourage farmers and in particular farmers in REPS 3 to attend these meetings."
