Four new Schemes to support Fishing Community a welcome boost – Cope

Four new schemes launched by the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Tony Killeen TD will provide much needed support for fishing communities in Donegal, according to Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP.

Welcoming the launch of the schemes, which will provide €1.82 million of grant aid in support of an investment of €4.5 million in 2010 to assist the industry, Pat the Cope said:

“The Schemes launched by Minister Killeen will support safety at sea, inshore fisheries management, environmental management of fisheries and LEADER type support for coastal communities dependant on fishing.

“The schemes are part funded by the EU and will provide €1.82 million of grant aid in support of an investment of €4.5 million in 2010 to assist industry.”

“The schemes are being delivered by BIM and will be focused in particular on inshore fisheries management and environmental management systems, enabling people working in the industry to improve their operations and also increase the value of their produce.”

“BIM will also be launching a LEADER type scheme involving coastal areas dependant on fishing.”

“These schemes will provide much needed support for fishing communities in Donegal.

Pat the Cope added that the European Parliament’s recognition of remote island communities under the Common Fisheries Policy last week following an amendment from Pat the Cope, is also good news for fishing communities in Donegal.
