Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP today secured special recognition for Irish fishermen under the review of the Common Fisheries Policy.

The European Parliament, which has received significant new powers in fisheries as a result of the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty last year, adopted today its first major report on how the Common Fisheries Policy should be reformed.

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP, a member of the European Parliament's Fisheries Committee stated today that

"I am delighted that the European Parliament overwhelmingly supported my amendment, which calls on the European Commission to give special recognition to remote island communities under the Common Fisheries Policy".

"A radical re-think is needed on the Common Fisheries Policy".

"In Ireland the majority of our boats are less than 15 metres in length. These boats have little or no impact on stocks and for the most part many fish non quota species."

"Most importantly, there is often no alternative source of employment for these communities".

"That is why, I tabled the amendment today".

"In addition, the new EU Commissioner for Fisheries, Maria Damanaki today reiterated her support for recognition of remote coastal communities and a regionalised approach. This is good news for Ireland and Irish fishermen."
