Donegal women to receive BreastCheck notifications in the coming weeks – Pat the Cope

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP has welcomed the news that women in the
larger Donegal Town area aged between 50 and 64 will be able to avail of
free mammograms under Breastcheck from October.

The news that the service is to begin its screening in Co Donegal was
confirmed to Pat the Cope by the National Cancer Screening Service.

“Women living in Donegal Town and the surrounding areas aged between 50
and 64 should start to receive notification of their appointment for
free breast x-rays in the post in the next week or two.”

“To ensure that an appointment is issued to you, women can also check
the BreastCheck register by calling 1800 45 45 55 or online at
www.breastcheck.ie.”

“The mammograms themselves will be conducted at a mobile digital
screening unit located in the grounds of Donegal Public Services Centre,
Drumlonagher, Donegal town.”

“Approximately 1,600 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Ireland
each year but if detected early, it is very treatable.”

“More than 1,800 women in the Donegal Town area will receive
notification of their appointment in the coming week or so and I want to
encourage them to take the appointment. The x-ray itself only takes a
half an hour but it could mean the difference between life and death.”

“The service will also be extended to the rest of the county in the near
future but women with any concerns about their health should not wait
for it to arrive in their area. They should seek an appointment with
their local GP because the earlier any abnormalities are detected, the
better the chance for recovery,” concluded Pat the Cope.
