Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP today said that " the European Union is the most successful peace project in the world.

The European Union has been to the forefront in supporting and consolidating the peace process in Ireland.

Between the years 2007 - 2013, the European Union through the Peace 111 programme and the Interreg 111 initiative is providing 400 million Euro to support cross border economic and social development in Ireland.
These monies are used to combat social inclusion, create jobs, promote tourism and develop cross border infrastructure projects.

The European Union accounts for 40% of total funding received by the International Fund for Ireland since it was first set up in 1986.

These monies which have been given to promote peace in Ireland are separate from monies received under the Common Agricultural Policy, the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund and the 7th EU Research and Technology Framework programme 2007 - 2013.

The strong support which the EU gives to the peace process in Ireland is a point that is never made by those who oppose the Lisbon Treaty."
