- The European Parliament should ratify the appointment of Jose Barroso as the new President of the European Commission when it meets in Strasbourg on July 15th 2009 next - This appointment must not be delayed because there are too many pressing political and economic issues to be dealt with at a European level -

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP, the leader of the Fianna Fail group in the European Parliament today said that the European Parliament should ratify the appointment of Jose Barroso as the next President of the European Parliament when it meets in Strasbourg on July 15th 2009 next.

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP " we have to face up to the fact that there is institutional squabbling going on in Europe at present concerning the timing to ratify Jose Barroso as the next President of the European Commission. This squabbling has to stop.

The European Union is facing serious political issues at present, not least seeking to address economic recession which has engulfed Europe over the past year.

The EU institutions must work together on a joint policy platform to ensure that we can get the European economy back on track. We must bring forward a series of new and innovative policies to create more jobs within the European economy and to continue to remain competitive.

The priority for the EU must be the economy.

We should not allow a vacuum to develop whereby the European Commission would be without a ratified President until the autumn.

We need to ratify Jose Barroso as the President of the European Commission for the next five years.

He has been an outstanding President of the European Commission for the past five years and he fully deserves another term at the helm of the European Commission.
I am very confident that the European Parliament will ratify Jose Barroso as the President of the European Commission for the next five years. But the sooner this is done the better.
Jose Barroso's appointment should be ratified on July 15th next in Strasbourg."
